A little good, and a little bad!

No matter how good my day goes, or how awesome my kids act, there is always that reminder that nothing is perfect. Whether it is the spilled orange juice on the carpet after a fun day at the zoo, or a fighting match over a sippy cup after a drama free day.  Reality is, there is no perfect, and often the imperfect is what keeps my day interesting (and often exhausting).

The Good's and Bad's of my children right now:

ASHLYN is a smart girl, too smart sometimes.  She has a strong desire to learn, and gather information. For a 3 1/2 year old, her vocabulary is incredible, and she carries on very adult like conversations. She will throw out phrases like.... "mommy this honeysuckle is lovely", or "this dinner is humongously spicy, and tingling my lips". I quickly see she is quite advanced in her communication and speech patterns after spending time with other children her age.

She is showing great interest in writing words, and I am starting to work on simple words for reading. She still loves to sing all the time, colors in the lines really well, writes her name extremely well, recognizes all of the alphabet by site. Visual, if not photographic, memory! She is a smart smart little girl.

With all this energy to learn, comes energy to burn.  When given too much down town, she quickly turns to negative behavior to keep entertained.  3's have turned out to be WAY more challenging for me than 2's for sure.  There is this sense of anger in her that I really can't pinpoint. In the last 2 months my sweet sweet Ashlyn often disappears at times.  She will talk back, get angry when reprimanded, cries when doesn't get her way, tries to hit or push when I tell her to do something, and is downright mean to Austin (pushing, hitting, yelling). Am hoping this is the TRYING THREE's phase, and nothing else, but is has been a big challenge for me.  I work hard to stick with positive positive positive reinforcement, but it's easy to lose my cool after a long day.

When i worked with preschoolers at the park district, the 3 and 4 year olds were always my favorite age. They are little adults, with little high pitch voices, and no grasp on sarcasm. I am striving to cherish our sweet conversations, her adorable voice when she sings, and her good moments of tender love.

Ashlyn LOVES Miss Carla and Miss Paula

AUSTIN is a ball of energy! He is talking up a storm. Will repeat most anything you ask him too.  It is the cutest when he says...... "bye bye daddy, yuv you daddy", in his sweet baby voice. The kid is obsessed with anything sports. He will point out a Ba-Be-Ball (basketball) from a million miles away. And if any sport comes on TV, he will yell it out. He loves to make a cheesy smile face, and scrunch up his nose.

He calls Ashlyn, Ah-Eee! If she jumps, he jumps....if she sings a song, he sings that song.  The little guy wants to do anything and everything his sister is doing.  Unfortunately, that brings a lot of frustration on her end, and she usually ends up just pushing him around. And Austin has the most hilarious walk. EVERYWHERE I go people are always commenting on his "strut".  He walks with style, and it's adorable!

I get why people say little boys are more lovey than girls, Austin is such a momma's boy.  He wants to snuggle, cuddle, hug, hold me, play with my hair, be close, ect.  A very very attached little boy. I love it though, and will enjoy it as long as these moments last. I'm guessing at 15 he will NOT be sticking my ponytail in his ear, and wanting to sleep in my bed at 5:30 every morning.

He is a kid that can fall asleep anywhere, but unfortunately his crib is not one of them lately.  He goes down easily at night, but wants nothing to do with it for naps.  So I end up running errands during the afternoon, take walks, or put him down in my bed.  And most every night, he wakes up between 5:00-6:30 and wants to come lay in bed next to me.

We are creeping up on the 2's and I am seeing more signs of that.  While his temper tantrums are short lived, as Ashlyn's always were, he is definitely starting to express himself more.  Unfortunately it often involves throwing something across the room, writing on walls, or hitting his sister....or me! Luckily, he responds to "No" (whereas Ashlyn laughed at me) and seems to be more sensitive with his feelings.

He is SO attached to my hair.... His security blanket

Let it Shine!

My newest obsession is a show called Long Island Medium.  It is about a woman who speaks to spirits, and relays their messages to loved ones. I have to admit, psychics and mediums are something that I thought was a little kooky, and plays on human emotions.  But after watching this show, I truly believe that our loved ones are with us and watching over us all the time.

My first example.... the show basically tells people that things don't happen "just because", their is often spirit guiding it.  I was sitting on the couch one day and I said, "I feel like Madonna was my mom's way of letting me know I'm loved and looked after." Then mentioned that I hadn't heard from her in awhile. NO JOKE, 1 minute later my phone rang, and it was Madonna calling.  I couldn't answer the phone, my breath was literally taken away.

Second example..... We were at church for my nephews 1st communion.  At the end of the ceremony, the band joyously started to sing "Let it shine".  I was singing out loud, and dancing with the kids. I got a wave of emotion, and felt 100% like my mom was right there with me.  And after watching this show, I believe even more she was dancing with me.

So now when i sing the National Anthem at the Bengals game, or hear You Raise Me Up on the radio, i am not only reminded of her.....but i believe she's right there listening and singing with me.

In honor of you mom.  The kids and I had a spur of the moment kitchen dance party. Happy Mother's Day....hope you enjoyed dancing with us!

Messy Love

Love isn't always hugs, and "I love you's".  The things we LOVE about our kids, and our life, are the often messy occurrences and regular day to day moments.  So here is to getting our hands dirty, and filling our hearts with messy good memories.  I don't always LOVE what my kids are doing, but I LOVE that we try to turn a mess into an experience.

LOVE IS: waiting to go on a road trip

LOVE IS: Sticking our feet (or bottoms) in cold water

LOVE IS: Taking a nature hike with good friends

 LOVE IS: Eating Spaghetti

LOVE IS: Being naked while eating spaghetti

LOVE IS: Foam painting on a sunny day

LOVE IS: Getting scratched in the face by your little brother

LOVE IS: Building shelves in the garage

LOVE IS: Finger painting

LOVE IS: Standing on chairs and spilling apple juice on the floor

LOVE IS: Pajama snuggles by the trash can

LOVE IS: Napping with your brother on the couch

Easter Eggs and Indy

We are so lucky that 1)our neighborhood has lots of kids in it and 2)that there are organized events for major holidays. As always it was a great turn out, and the kids loved running around for their 1st Easter egg hunt of the season. Austin quickly caught the hang of picking up eggs and putting them in the basket. He got a little distracted when he realized their was candy inside, but he still managed to do a lot with little assistance.

The following week we had Ashlyn's Easter party at preschool. The kids munched on carrots, made egg shakers, sang "Jesus is Alive", and had a fun Easter egg hunt on the playground. Ashlyn was most excited to wear her pretty dress to school. She looked absolutely Gorgeous in it. I remember helping my mom pick it out for Madison, so it felt special to see my big girl in it now.

Waiting in line for the hunt

March 31st turned out to be a not so great day to mark on the calendar. Although it is Ashley's birthday, Ashlyn decided to mark it with her own memory. After flipping around doing cartwheels all morning, she fell over crying that her arm hurt. The cry was harder, the pain lasted longer (she normally stops crying within minutes), she didn't want pressure on it, held it funny, and then proceeded to fall asleep on the couch. All things that just didn't feel right. So off to the Dr. we went.....after 2 hours, an X-ray, and an ER visit.....we had 1 fractured forearm. Clearly Matt and I were concerned at how easily she broke her arm (especially being her second break), but Dr.'s assure us her bone density is good and it was most likely a fluke. Thankfully the cast is waterproof this time, but still: here is to hoping for NO more broken bones, EVER!!!

Easter celebrations and fun continued with a fun evening with Ducky and Jill. They came down to babysit so that mommy and daddy could have a night out. Felt guilty going after she broke her arm that morning, but she was more sad that she'd miss out on hanging out with Ducky than us leaving her. They made her night bringing down EAster baskets full of books, an adorable dress, balls, and some candy. And Ashlyn is still talking about coloring Easter eggs with them!

Last, but certainly NOT least.....Easter Weekend! We planned a little vacation to Indianapolis with Matt's family since no other family was coming into town for the holiday. Ashlyn was so excited and talked about it for weeks. We all hopped into a rented mini van, and made the quick 2 hour drive. Friday we went straight to the Zoo, which was fabulous. My favorite was the adorable baby elephants, Austin got a kick out of the Rhino's and Ashlyn loved touching a shark.

We then spent ALL day Saturday at the Children's museum. It was Fabulous. Even without naps, both kids lasted 6 hours. I think Austin loved it as much as Ashlyn. We went to the planetarium, saw an hour long play, and hit up nearly the whole museum. Finished up the evening with some pizza and a really fun horse & carriage ride around downtown Indy.

Easter morning we went to mass at a Gorgeous church downtown. Easter service and the message is a bit tough since it was also the day mom rose, and i had my moments of sadness, but overall I just felt a sense of peace. I loved that we did something different for Easter. Created memories that the kids and us will certainly remember more than just another ham dinner at home. It was a Fabulous weekend! (and the hotel pool made a 3 yr old very happy)

And of course we couldn't finish out the Easter weekend without an Easter Egg hunt at Mimi and Papa's house. They hid enough eggs for all 6 grandkids, but Ashlyn and Austin had no problem finding them all. So much fun!
